What is 3D scanning and why is it the right choice?

Traditional method of casting and recasting can get messy and time consuming. Well, did you know there is an efficient and accurate way to measure your stump without casting? Yes, it's 3D Scanning.

Three Dimensional (3-D) Technology provides an accurate image of any object that can be animated or exist in real life. 3D technology to develop the three-dimensional shape of the stump and provide a much more accurate shape and size of the patients. However, the 3D Scanning technology helps the patients not to cast any plaster on their stump and enhances their experience in terms of developing new artificial limbs or prosthetics.

There are several benefits of 3D Scanning that are mentioned below:-

  • 3D scanning not only improve the fitting but also provide 90 to 95 percent accuracy towards the measurement of the stump.
  • It allows us to make several modifications as and when required.
  • Use of Plaster of Paris is not required as in winter POP does not set easily.
  • Reduces the time and effort of the patients in the clinic.
  • The Scanning process provides a smooth process for the patients.
  • In winter it is difficult to cast paster and get a proper mold for the prosthetic. This results in a fit issue and decrease in accuracy.
  • 3D Scanning improves the fitting and provides accurate measurements.

Choosing a prosthetist wisely can help you to get proper fitting and accuracy for your stump. As a result it will enhance compatibility and provide more comfort. It's necessary to make a smart decision and get a more comfortable socket. It will help you to boost your confidence while walking. Socket fitting is the priority for the patients. It helps them to become successful while having a perfect walking posture. However, you can visit one-stop amputee guide! Here for further information and better guidance.

Japanese Prosthetic-leg Manufacturer Partners with Globally Renowned NGO Jaipur Foot

Instalimb, the world’s first 3D-printed prosthetic legs manufacturer based in Japan, has partnered with the renowned NGO Jaipur Foot. Instalimb uses never-before-seen 3D printing and machine learning (AI) technology to create affordable and high-quality 3D-printed prosthetics & orthotics across the world.

As part of this collaboration, Instalimb will supply its 3D-printed sockets to the Jaipur Foot Organization, which the latter will fit their patients. The joint project will be funded by the Japanese Government.

“We, at Instalimb, are committed to offering enhanced services and providing access to the best-in-class technology in the prosthesis. Jaipur Foot Organization has been selflessly doing excellent work catering to the needs of amputees in India. We are looking forward to working together with them and to combining our strengths to transform the lives of amputees across the world,” said Yutaka Tokushima, CEO of Instalimb.

Jaipur Foot is part of the Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), the world’s largest organization rehabilitating over 1.78 million disabled providing artificial limbs, calipers, and other aids and appliances totally free of cost to patients.

“We receive inquiries for Jaipur limbs from amputees across the world. However, our challenge was that using the current technology, we cannot help a patient unless he/she comes to our center. This is logistically not possible for amputees living in distant places or other countries. Through our partnership with Instalimb, we are looking at the feasibility of remote prosthetic fabrication with the ultimate goal of making prostheses accessible to all,” said Dr. Pooja Mukul MD, Technical Director, Jaipur Foot Organization BMVSS.

Instalimb recently announced it has raised 445 million yen (₹ 26 crores) in Series A funding in Japan (including investment, loans, and grants) to foray into the Indian market. The company launched its technologically advanced prosthetic wear solutions in Gurgaon in July.

Accelerated by its robust funding and investment, Instalimb is currently working to install its 3D technologies in other prosthetic clinics, both NGOs and private companies.

Amputee care : Winter is here!

As winter approaches us with full force, we must be prepared for what is coming. As an amputee (both above and below the knee), we understand that this can be a new challenge. The freezing temperatures not only cause joint pains but also make daily tasks and travel complicated.

Worry not, we’re here to help you simplify your winter preparation. Take a look at these five tips below:

  1. Skin care - Your skin gets dry and may crack. While using an artificial leg, your dry skin may increase friction within the socket leading to further pain in movement and skin damage. To prevent it, moisturize your stump at regular intervals and keep your socket clean.
  1. Limb volume fluctuations - The cold may constrict your blood vessels and lead to poor circulation in your stump. It might cause numbness and shrinkage. Try to keep your stump warm and consult a good prosthetist to guide you through.
  1. Be careful while walking - The frost and fog on your path may cause you to slip, taking short strides and wearing shoes with good grip will help you through the upcoming cold. If your area has heavy snowfall, it’s always best to invest in additional support such as a walking stick.
  1. Battling joint pain - As the temperatures drop, your joints feel restricted and movements are painful. To resolve it, incorporate stretching and mild exercises to your daily routine. They will help you to have proper circulation in your joints and muscles.
  1. Nutrition -  Consume foods that contain Vitamin D, such as milk, grains, eggs, and yogurt among others. You can also take a Vitamin D supplement.
